Six critical steps to prepare for a Job Faire

Standing out at a Job Faire can make a difference in your job search. Job Faires are starting to pick up, and a major job search company is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a Silicon Valley Career Faire in January, 10 companies as showing up, and Dice has 82 job fairs scheduled for 2010 across the US.

How do you rise above the crowd at a Job Fair? The contention can be noteworthy, but you can help yourself stick out from the bunch with early preparation. At AA-Careers, we have a straight-forward step-by-step process to get ready. Planning to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, investigate the companies that are going and pick your targets. Use the internet to check out the companies that are there before you even decide to go. Go to their web sites and see if they have their openings posted. Pick a small number to go after, and get ready to spend an hour or more researching each one. It’s hard to do more than 9 in a day, and 3-5 is a much more reasonable target. For each hiring organization, you want to know: executive names, recent news, and key product lines. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You’ll end up with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job postings on the web, read them to see what the company is looking for. Create a mapping of your achievements and skills to the requirements of the job. Make the nomenclature match. If the hiring company calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The accomplishments should be written in the style of the hiring company.

Third, create a ‘mini sales pitch’ for each potential company/position combination. Write down a 60 second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat out loud showing why you are a good candidate for that position. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet the team from the company at the job stall.

Fourth, modify your resume for each opportunity. The objective on your resume should exactly match the position you’re want. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the achievements and skills that most clearly match the job description. Especially at a Career Fair, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be simple to see that you’re a fit based on your resume.

Fifth, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress well and be properly groomed. Don’t overdress (this isn’t a date!) and don’t underdress (no jeans or t-shirts, no matter how much you paid for them). Avoid strong cologne or perfume.

Finally, practice your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each position – bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a intelligibly marked folder. Keep them in a lightweight briefcase or folio.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

One of the fun aspects about the World Wide Web is that you can share your thoughts and ideas freely with people from around the world. For many years people in all walks of life have published essays, even books, online. Some fortunate few have built up large loyal audiences. You will find their names mentioned on many Web sites. Among the fans of J.R.R. Tolkien one name crops up on thousands of Web sites: Michael Martinez. Having published three books on Middle-earth, the imaginary setting for Tolkien’s books like The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Martinez has also published around 200 essays on the Web.

But being at the top of your field means that people will eventually try to knock you down. Although that is no way to establish authority or credibility, there are still plenty of people who believe the best scholarship is represented by personal attacks, poison pen campaigns, and character assassination. Two people who recently came gunning for Martinez with these tactics are David Gransby (posting as halfir) and someone using the anonymous screen name Elenhir. Elenhir recently wrote an essay about Balrog wings, trying to disprove the well-established belief that Tolkien described a fantasy creature he called a Balrog as having wings of darkness or shadow.

This Balrog wings debate has raged for many years — probably for decades. Even Wired Magazine has noted the infamous Balrog Wings War. Martinez, who has written the truth about Balrogs in more than one essay, has provided a fair and unbiased voice in the arguments. Nonetheless, even he acknowledges that he has sometimes defended himself too much against the lies that pervade Tolkien fandom.

Most people in the Tolkien fan community don’t seem to take sides. They do occasionally participate in polls and surveys, and those usually show that 70-80% of all Tolkien readers believe the Balrog has some sort of wings. People who don’t want the Balrog to have wings try to prove they are “metaphorical” or that older, previously unpublished stories with no connection to The Lord of the Rings provide insight into the controversial Balrog. These arguments have all been thoroughly discredited.

And yet every now and then someone tries to resurrect them, repeating the mistakes of the past. Rather than respond to another failed attempt to distort the facts (by the mysterious Elenhir), Martinez recently said he did not want to rebut the essay. In return, Elenhir and Gransby (halfir) unleashed a torrent of personal attacks against Martinez. Among their false claims is the ridiculous assertion that Martinez — widely noted for meticulous, detailed citations — does not support his arguments with references to the books. In the final analysis one must conclude that the latest brouhaha is just another attempt to cover up bad scholarship with misdirection and abuse.

The El Gordo Lottery is part of the Euromillions Euro lotto, but if that's all you've heard there's a great deal more to find out. Highly regarded for having one of the largest jackpots of our time, this game of chance offers pots ranging from eighty four million to 2.6 billion Euros. This is not the lottery's only claim to fame. The El Gordo Lottery puts more than 13,000 prizes up for grabs, which makes for a one in six chance of winning a prize.

A major event within the Euromillions Euro lottery is the El Gordo Loteria – and you would do well to know more about this part. Promising payouts between 84 million and two point six billion Euros, the lottery claims one of the world’s richest jackpots. And yet there’s more. This lottery puts more than 13,000 prizes up for grabs, which will give you a one in six chance of winning a prize. These are stunning odds when compared with the majority of other major lotteries.

To enter the draw, one choice is a full ticket, called a “serie”. Also available is a “d©cimo”, worth one tenth of a full ticket. This is your other option. Unfortunately, both these choices are comparatively pricy ways to play and they will not increase your odds of winning . This is the reason that the e-lottery scheme is used by many Euromillions Euro lotto players.

There is one draw per month in the Euromillions Euro lotto. Three months a year see special drawings guaranteeing significantly more substantive prizes. The special lotteries are scheduled to take place in January, summer, and at Christmas: respectively, they are El Nio, San Ildefonso & El Gordo.

Unlike other lottery systems, the El Gordo Lottery employs balls sporting five digits apiece ranging from 00,000 to 84,999. During the draw a ball is drawn from a bowl to find the winning number while a second is pulled out of the second bowl to find the prize value.

The e-lottery system can guarantee a prize to every participant. You are automatically assigned a team when you buy in to the El Gordo Lottery syndicate. With each team numbered between zero and nine, the final digit on the winning number determines the winning team and they take the prize. This money is then divided among the team members. Everyone subscribes again for the draw the following month and it starts all over again.

We have had ATT TV service set up for over a week now. An equivalent bundle through any cable provider would be almost double what I am paying ATT’s Television service. I really respect U-Verse providing a practical all-in-one package that keeps from nailing subscribers with a bunch of bs charges. 3 receivers (1 with DVR capabilities) are included in the price.

HD embedded for complimentary for one year – only $10 per year after the promotional point terminates… not poor considering U-Verse provides at least twice the number of ATT TV HD channels that others offer.

Station switching is relatively quick. Almost as fast as analog cable. On Demand (Pay-per-view) content is nice but not as close as the selection provided by other services. I had a party the evening after installation – they wanted to view UFC, but U-Verse wasn’t showing it. When I called, the rep I spoke with had received many similar calls.

Equipment overall works as promoted. Right now, there are only 4 TV streams ready in the local market. I have only run out of streams one time – even after transposing all 42 of my shows tapings from my Comcast box! (You can get some of your DVR’s settings from your private U-Verse AT&T website – decent plus). I do not have high def, thus no need.

Viewing an HD station takes up 2 streams – the leftover flows can only be used for standard definition networks. The word is that, a bump of the amount of TV streams happening for the end of the year. Also, AT&T will be imparting the ability to watch DVR shows from any receiver.
