Office of Fair Trading Calls for Scrutiny of T-Mobile – Orange Merger

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

The anticipated merger of Orange and T-Mobile is likely to be delayed following a move by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), which has directed the regulatory authorities to scrutinize the merger deal.

Proposed some time back, the two companies will create the largest mobile operator in the country, if the merger was allowed to take place. The decision regarding the deal lies with the European Commission in Brussels, with both companies hoping for the judgement to be in favour of the merger as early as possible.

Considering the large market share the merged company would hold and the large spectrum allocation it would possess, amidst other concerns, many are afraid that Brussels might not be able to properly address the issue.

The support of the Office of Fair Trading will be welcome for various consumer groups that have been campaigning for a UK review, fearing that if the merger goes ahead then it will make competition virtually non-existent thereby leading to an increase in prices for the customers. The OFT is particularly worried about the implication of the merger on 3, which is the UK’s smallest network and stands to lose the most to a mobile giant like T-Orange.

Broadband Prices Declining in Britain, Says Ofcom

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Communication watchdog, Ofcom recently conducted a study on the comparative costs of communication services in the UK vis–vis those in Europe and US and found that the consumers in Britain are paying far less than their counterparts in other countries.

The research took into account five household types across the UK and studied broadband implications on the same as compared to similar services in Spain, France, US, Germany and Italy. It was seen that prices in Britain had been on a decline since 2008 and were lower than all other countries in three out of the five types of households.

Starting with a typical family household with broadband, fixed line, mobile phone and pay-TV, the costs were found to be as much as 28percent less than that in Italy, which is the next cheapest country in this context. Data suggests that the prices for cheapest mobile service came down by 8percent and that for cheapest broadband service came down by 14percent between 2008 and 2009.

The most important reason for such fall in prices is the presence of a highly competitive broadband market in the UK. In fact, it is now possible to get a mobile broadband connection for £4.98 to £7.50 per month depending upon whether you are an Orange customer or not. You can also get a free laptop with broadband connection for £25 per month. This explains the lower costs in the UK as compared to other countries.

3 Discloses its Plan for New Mobile Broadband Scheme named MiFi

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Mobile broadband service provider 3 has finally disclosed the pricing and marketing of its newly announced mobile Wi-Fi, named as MiFi, that will be launched soon.

MiFi operates upon a wireless modem and allows a full-fledged mobile Wi-Fi connection or network for as many as five users at the same time. Wi-Fi enabled equipments like smart phones, iPods and netbooks are all capable of picking up the signal on their own. This enables the user to browse and download simultaneously. The service is easy to use and just needs a 3 SIM card to be plugged into the device. Turning the device to the ‘on mode’ can connect it to the internet through mobile broadband.

Marc Allera, Sales and Marketing Director at 3 UK, said mobile Wi-Fi is a must amongst people who keep travelling. He assured that 3 is trying its best to make the service more affordable as well as accessible to an average person. He pointed out that the new wireless connection could make a great combo with laptops (click for latest laptop deals) and iPods. He added that the company is eyeing customers who will buy these gadgets during the pre-Christmas shopping season and has plans to promote their new service among them.

The MiFi service is ready to hit the stores on September 18. However, the online sales and telesales will start from September17. The service provider has planned the launch of two schemes – the ‘Ready to Go’ kit and the ‘Broadband 5GB 1 month’ plan. The ‘Ready to Go’ comes with a wireless modem and 3GB data usable over a trimester and costs 99.99 pounds, while the second pack has a monthly rental of 15 pounds and comes with a modem priced at 69.99 pounds.

Freerunner to Offer WiFi to Cafes at a Third of the Market Price

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Surfers in the UK have reason to rejoice, as reports of the launch of a new public Wi-Fi network in the country have been made public. That is because accessing the network will not cost the surfers anything, and they will not even have to buy a meal or a coffee to be able to use it.

The new network, called Freerunner, is actually aimed at offering free access in public areas like schools, libraries, and train stations. The service will also be free of cost for customers in commercial places like fast food joints and cafes, but the cost will be borne by the establishment that is hosting the service. That should be easy though, considering that Freerunner costs only one third of what competing services currently cost.

Geddes, CEO of Freerunner, while commenting on the venture, said that Wi-Fi access was exploding back in 2002 when it was first launched, but gradually the networks started getting locked down and the cost of access escalated. According to him, some of the access points currently cost as much as an entire month’s bill for a residential broadband connection. Click for info on the cheapest broadband.

Freerunner is waiting for funds from NorthStar to arrive, so that it can start on the first leg of the network in the North East of the UK. If it is successful there, the network will spread to the rest of the country soon enough.

Broadband and Social Networking Sites Boost Internet’s Popularity as Most Popular Invention

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

The availability of superfast broadband and the extraordinary rise of the social networking sites are primarily responsible for the increase in popularity of the internet according to Trevor Baylis, the inventor who created the wind-up radio. He was commenting on the recent survey carried out by the Intellectual Property Office, which showed that the UK public believe that the internet is the best modern invention.

Taking the opportunity to comment on the importance of inventions, Trevor Baylis said that the country’s well being and economical future depends on new inventions and continuous innovations. Hence, the younger generations should be encouraged to take up research and become inventors in future. The country should not only encourage, but also protect its future inventions.

The nationwide survey revealed the internet as the popular choice for the greatest invention of the modern day. Around 37 per cent of the 1,977 individuals surveyed, voted in its favour, leaving behind the other close contenders, the MP3 player and the mobile phone.

The Intellectual Property Office had joined hands with the Aardman Animations to conduct the survey, which was originally intended for release with an exhibition in the London Science Museum called ‘Cracking Ideas’, dedicated to Wallace and Gromit, the most popular animated inventors of all time.

Annoyed at Excessive Phone Bills?

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Like a large proportion of the rest of the country the effects of the recession are starting to catch up with me. Also like a lot of people I have a small mountain of debt, so thought I would share this great money saving tip. If you want to reduce your expenditure a great way to do so is to sign up to a VoIP provider. I have a lot of friends I have made over the years when travelling, who live in different countries. I’m terrible at keeping in contact with people at the best of times, let alone when it’s the price of a long distance phone call. With VoIP that is no longer a worry; calls are really cheap, if not free in some circumstances.

I can definitely recommend it – calls are completely clear and there have been no problems with the line cutting out or anything. I think is possible to get some mobile VoIP applications now as well which I will definitely investigate. Now I’m making cheap calls to Italy amongst other places I’ve saved myself enough money to spend on a few things I have been hopelessly saving up for over the past year – a new ipod. I can finally say good bye to my ancient mini disk player and welcome in the 21st century.
