Video Podcasting

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

The original audio Podcasting concept was developed by Adam Curry. It was created as a alternative content distribution method that allows people to produce and distribute audio programming. Video is a recently added feature.

Video Podcasting is the combination of video files made available for download, a specialized xml file and software capable of reading the xml file. The xml file is known as Real Simple Syndication.

Each video Podcast publisher creates a unique Real Simple Syndication ( which is more commonly known as RSS ) file. The purpose of the RSS file is to describe the video, distinguish it from other publisher’s material, presenting the most current content available and allowing people to subscribe to individual Podcast “stations”.

Anyone with a Internet connection and access to a web host that allows media file and xml file hosting, is capable of distributing their own video content with Podcasting.

Peer to Peer data transfer can be used to distribute the video Podcast media files and minimize bandwidth requirements. Bittorrent and Dijjer are both open source software applications that can be used for Peer to Peer Podcast distribution.

Creating a video Podcast is very easy. Video can be recorded using free or low cost software. Web cams or digital cameras can be used to capture video imaging. The “raw” video can then be edited using open source or free software. The completed video can then be encoded using open source video codecs, such as VP3, Theora or Dirac, to compress the video and optimize it for Internet distribution. Free software can also be used to create the RSS files.

Video Podcasting does not require special server distribution software such as Internet broadcasting does. There are no technical restrictions on the types of video encoding formats available for video Podcasting.

Hanging Sheetrock for the Ceiling

Doing Sheetrock for your does not have to be hard. It can be easy and fun. It just depends on you. Using the right materials for the project is what it’s all about. Like the right length of board.

Over the years, I have found that while doing Home Remodeling Projects it is best to have 2-3 people to hang the ceiling; it’s much easier than using a Drywall Jack. Drywall Board of 1/2″ x 4×8 standard sheetrock is best for ceilings, depending on the area of the ceiling. If there is a large area then use size 4×10 or 4×12.

Have 2 people to put the piece of sheet rock in place and to hold it tight, while the other person screws it in place with 1-3/8 Drywall screws. Screw at least 3 in the middle about 12 inches apart in order to hold it in place before screwing the borders. Always remember to stagger your joints like laying brick. Make sure that you put 3 screws in the middle of the sheet rock after you screw the border.

To hang the walls, do not stand the sheet rock upright; lay it flat across the walls. Start with the first piece up against the ceiling, and then place the next piece on the bottom of it. After screwing the perimeter, put 2, 1-3/8 screws in the middle of the sheet rock about 12 inches apart, it adds support. Remember again to stagger your joints.

This is your first step to your sheetrocking Home Remodeling Project

Money Is Just An Illusion – You Need To Become A Magician

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

As we grow up in this modern world, we create mental associations that shape our thinking and which prompt us to consider money a ‘thing’, something tangible that we can accumulate, treasure, spend and save. We never actually think of it as something we can create, unless we are thinking to embark on illegal actions. But actually when we look at money from the right perspective, we can discover that money is not a thing, it is just an illusion that each one of us can create.

You’re probably dismissing me right now, because you’ve certainly had in your hands all those dollar bank notes and checks during the years. This has created an association in your mind, linking the bank notes and checks, which are things, with money. But actually money goes way beyond bank notes and checks. Money is just an illusion, a concept, created to allow us to exchange goods in a practical way. Give me a chance to explain.

Originally, many, many moons ago, it all started with precious metals, like gold and silver used as currency in order to save the value of things, like potatoes for example. People discovered that it was easier and more practical to save pieces of gold or silver for months, if not years; than to find a way of preserving their potatoes through the winter in order to be able to exchange them for something else only available in spring. They discovered they could convert the value of the potatoes into gold or silver and then use this stored value when necessary by exchanging the gold for something they needed later on. This system evolved with the times from weighted gold to bank notes backed by gold. In other words, it was an illusion backed by reality. However, by 1971, the last of the world governments had switched from using those ‘real things with real value’ as money, to using the illusion of money.

For the governments this is the perfect solution. First of all, they are now not limited in the amount of money they have at their disposal. They don’t depend on the capacity of a mining company to extract gold or silver from the earth. They now can create (understand: PRINT or COIN) as much money as they want or need. As a direct result of this, there is no limit in the amount of money that can actually exist in the world as long as the illusion works and people believe it.

Just to give you a glimpse of the unbelievable amount of money that exist in the world. Take a look at the size of the FOREX market transactions that take place everyday, not every week or month, but everyday: A staggering 1.5 trillion USD! And what about the debt of most of the developed countries? Well, it runs in the hundreds of billions of dollars!

I hope these examples help you understand that money can actually be created out of nothing because it’s just an illusion. Governments do it everyday, and so can you.

The key is to become your own creator of money. In other words, to become a Money Magician. How can you achieve this? There are many ways of getting to this point. But there are two very important tools one has to consider if the goal is to create your own money.

Number one is KNOWLEDGE. Knowledge has to do with the mind. The more you understand money, the better you will be at creating money. That is, you will be able to recognize opportunities that will bring you more money. Also, you will be aware of the importance of taking action when those opportunities knock on your door. Even better, when your knowledge of how the money system works improves, you’ll be able to, not only, recognize golden opportunities, but to ‘create’ those opportunities. At this level is where the BIG money is.

Another very important tool to be a Money Magician or, in different terms, to be able to create money, is TECHNOLOGY. Think about it, because of technology, totally new economic fields have been created throughout history and it keeps happening until today. Enter the internet, one of the greatest technological achievements ever. Because of it, there is people making millions just with ideas. For example, if you register a domain name that ends up being very popular, like sex.com did, you can sell it; not for pennies, but for millions. If this would happen to you, hadn’t you actually created money out of nothing? Yes, and that is precisely what I’m talking about.

You can use technology and knowledge in ways never before thought of. Take also a look at that kid that turned his website into a “buy a pixel billboard”. He had an idea, in other words, he used his knowledge and technology to become millionaire. What did he sell? Actually, an illusion. He turned himself into a Money Magician and created money out of nothing.

In this world, because of knowledge and technology we have unlimited wealth. It’s just a matter of baking our own moneymaking pie. Do you have what it takes? We all do, but first we have to change our attitudes and mental associations toward money. When that happens, and I hope this article helps, you are on your way to becoming a ‘Money Magician’.

Six Sigma Training – Why and How

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Although Six Sigma sounds like a distant star in a galaxy far, far away, the term is very easy to explain, once you know sigma is the character in the Greek alphabet that is used in mathematical statistics to identify a standard deviation. A standard deviation is defined by how tightly the various outputs of a process are clustered around the mean in a set of data. In other words, how divergent the outputs are from the statistical average. In statistical terms, Six Sigma means that if there were 1 million opportunities for a defect (defined as anything outside of customer specifications) to occur, no more than 3.4 defects would be permitted, so that the quality of the output is near perfect. As such Six Sigma is seen as the ultimate goal in achieving almost immaculate processes through continual improvement.

Six Sigma achieves this by implementing a disciplined, data driven methodology for eliminating defects in any process, from the manufacture of a product to after sale customer service. It focuses on process improvement and variation reduction through the application of Six Sigma improvement projects using the following two Six Sigma sub-methodologies:

  • The Six Sigma DMAIC process (define, measure, analyse, improve, control), the most common Six Sigma improvement tool, which focuses on ensuring the improvement is clearly defined and measured and is used for existing processes that have fallen below customer specifications and require incremental improvement. Data is analysed to identify problems and the improvement is consolidated through process controls.
  • The Six Sigma DMADV process (define, measure, analyse, design, verify), which is an improvement system used to develop new products or processes to Six Sigma quality levels. It can also be employed if the current process needs more than just incremental improvement.
  • Both Six Sigma processes, which can be easily calculated using a Six Sigma calculator, are executed by Six Sigma Green Belts and Six Sigma Black Belts, and are overseen by Six Sigma Master Black Belts. Each Member of the Six Sigma team is given key responsibilities for analysing information that will have an impact on improving processes and customer satisfaction.

The question you’ll be asking now is how much benefit Six Sigma training can give your company. Well, in classic Six Sigma style, just have a look at the data. General Electric, one of the most successful companies to implement Six Sigma training, estimated that it has benefited the company a staggering $10 billion in the five years after implementation. And the Six Sigma Academy estimates that the approximate saving Black Belts give companies is $230,000 per project, of which between four and six can be completed per year. Organisations such as Motorola, who initiated Six Sigma training in 1987 and won the Malcolm Baldrige quality prize for it, ABB, Honeywell and Allied Signal will be happy to attest to this.

Perhaps one of the most critical reasons why Six Sigma has had such tremendous success lies in one of its most distinctive differences from other quality management systems: the extent to which it is inextricably linked to business finances. No matter the project at hand, the financial benefits are quantified and used to help prioritise the various stages of improvement. These are then re-evaluated during the analysis phase to ensure that the cost of the improvements will be supported by its overall benefit to the company. And the financial benefits are verified once again at the end of the project. Such a rigorous procedure also has the benefit of including all sections of the company in the Six Sigma training, because all are naturally linked to the company’s finances.

Which Six Sigma Training Company is right for your you?

Now that you know what Six Sigma training involves and the reasons why your company should consider employing it, the final question is how to find the right consultant for your company. Well, the first thing is to define what you want to achieve by implementing Six Sigma, and whether you want it implemented right across the company or only in selected areas. This decision should not be made by you alone, but in conference with other company employees, because implementation should be given the highest priority and support if it is to go ahead.

Once you have established the benefits of implementing Six Sigma and got approval for it from your colleagues, you should seek references from your peers in other companies about how their Six Sigma training was handled. Six Sigma is very much a people business, so it is also important to speak to some of the Black Belts or managers of any shortlisted Six Sigma companies to see if you click with them and they have the required level of experience. The level of experience they have of working in your field isn’t necessarily that relevant compared to the level of mutual understanding and their aptitude as trainers, because good training means your colleagues will have skills that are transferable to other industries. Also, consider the breadth of service being offered. Will the people who start out training you still be there at the end? Do they have their own training materials? Will there be a help desk for employees to call after the training has been completed to ask about any Six Sigma problems that may arise in the future?

Finally, once you have made sure you know the number of defects the process is currently producing and establish the number you will be satisfied with at the end of the project, you are in a position to start the process of finding the best Six Sigma trainer for your company. The best of luck!

Info On the Magnificent Windsor Castle

    Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Windsor Castle is one of the largest colonised castles around today & the eldest in continuous occupation (well over nine hundred years). It’s one of Queen Elizabeth’s three authorised residences, & is frequently understood to be easily her most desired home. The Royal Standard soars over the Round Tower of Windsor Castle each and every time Queen Elizabeth is in palace – nonetheless, at alternative occasions, the Union Jack flag soars in its position.

Samuel Pepys proclaimed the Castle to be “the single most passionate castle around.” That was thought in sixteen-sixty-six and the same has been said today.

    Windsor Castle Exciting History:

The history of Windsor can be located in the beginning of the seventh century Saxon hamlet of Windlesora, where the recent day parish of Old Windsor is. The settlement of Windsor is traditionally well-known as the “New Windsor” – the actual phrase “new” being taken in a relative sense! If you are travelling to England then why not visit Windsor Castle, with Enjoy England.

Windsor Castle at the start was constructed by the notorious William the Conqueror, due to his assault of England in ten-sixty-six. The original construction was put together from wood with gravel fortifications. Windsor Castle held an understandable strategic location on a steep hill above the River Thames, and was a division of an assortment of strongholds around the Capital, with the Tower of London, one whole days journey away, at its core.

The Castle was then later remodelled in rock, and increased in importance over the forthcoming centuries. More recently Henry the 2nd assembled the Round Tower and the original stone outer wall. Following the English Civil War, the building’s main function became that of a royal residence. The Castle has stayed mostly unchanged ever since the early 19th century, apart from the overhaul effort that followed the hideous fire.

Do You Have A Self-Managed Development Guide (SMDG)?

    Monday, June 16th, 2008

The Self-Managed Development (SMD) Guide is a customized learning tool that can be developed based on workplace requirements of a specific organization, in which an employee is expected to perform his/her duties.

Purpose Of The SMDG: To outline key – mostly practical – learning points for employees to follow in order to become fully competent – and also stay continually relevant – on their jobs.

Using competencies defined as requisite for optimal performance within that environment, this kind of guide can be produced – for any workplace. This will help the relevant employee(s) quickly and successfully settle into their roles – to the benefit of both employer and employee.

The SMD guide will give new entrants into an organization(or position/job), a sense of direction in terms of what they should be doing, and what they are expected to know – or be able to do – at the end of their training(or induction).

Specific Benefits Of Having A SMDG

(a). Makes clear to employee ALL that s/he is expected to know/be able to do in order to perform well on the job.

(b). Encourages employee to take timely, personal action toward developing specified competencies to do job better.

(c). Helps your company cut costs on formal training.

(d). Results in continuous improvement in workplace performance of your staff = better delivery = improved customer satisfaction.

(e). Requires employees to create Learning Logs that document actual learning experienced – which in future become invaluable reference materials or aide-memoir.

I developed this concept of a customizable SMD guide in September 2001, drawing inspiration from Jim Stewart’s Speed Training System. Then I used it for Trainee Engineering Tradesmen who reported to me, while I was Technical Training and Development Manager(TTDM), Guinness Nigeria Plc, Benin Brewery.

Read the full story of how(and why) I did this, in an excerpt from my Ten Ways self-help manual in the box below.

    ————————————————

As Training and Technical Development Manager, while in Guinness, I had also played this coaching and people development role with the same passion. It is the same reason why today I am a Self-Development/Performance Enhancement Specialist.

In 2001, due to a large number of capital intensive and high priority projects going on in the brewery when about five(5) young trainee engineering tradesmen men joined us, myself and the Training Instructors who reported to me, were unable to devote as much time as would have been adequate to help the trainees really learn all they needed.

After watching the young men move around for some weeks without much sense of purpose, I made out time to put together – with extensive input from the instructors – what I called a “Self-Managed Development Guide” document. This document contained ALL the learning points to be studied (theoretically and practically) by each individual trainee in order to be fully ready for deployment to a department within the duration of the training programme.

Basically, it was an instrument that empowered the trainee to manage his training, and move at his own pace(recall Peter Drucker’s admonition). For instance, the guide contained references to everything the trainee needed to read up, or become physically familiar with – including plants, equipments, skills and names of designated resources persons across the site who could help with learning about them.

Each trainee therefore only needed to decide when and where he wished to acquire the new learning, and use the Learning Log(provided in the guide document) to record actual learning achieved. Then he would report periodically to me or the available Training Instructor to review his progress against the set goals. During this interaction, and without compromising our commitment to the brewery projects, I and the Instructors were able to conduct short practical tests, and quizzes to assess the true progress of the trainee.

Did it work you ask? Did the trainees demonstrate good performance when eventually posted out to departments? Yes they did. As a matter of fact, one day, not long after they had been posted out, they returned to my office as a group to present me with a gift.

One of them then spoke on behalf of the others that during the training period, they had complained among themselves about how I always kept pushing them to learn more etc.

But since they arrived at their various departments, they had found themselves treated with respect because of the performances they delivered on the job – and also the unusual proficiency they demonstrated in the use of technology(e.g. Computers) that the older hands still struggled to master(I had spent some weekends giving them practical Computer and Internet Training, especially how to use Search Engines to find useful engineering, and problem solving information).

Today, preparation of a Self-Managed Development Guide document for use in large or small organizations is now one of the many unique services I offer as a Self-Development/ Performance Enhancement Specialist. I can do this, because I know it works – having seen the results of its proper use myself.

You can also try and influence the development of a similar instrument in your workplace. It would certainly take a lot of work out of the process of helping new employees or trainees settle into their new jobs.

You would then be able to simply work with them to check off their achieved learnings, and continue as necessary, providing useful corrective feedback as appropriate.

A person in paid employment who wants to experience rapid career advancement must make out time to coach and develop others. Only by so doing can she increase the chances of moving up when the opportunity comes. I like to ask people this question: “How can you get promoted from your current position if no one else has the competence to do fill it?”.

And how will anyone else learn how to do that job quickly enough, if YOU don’t make the effort to coach those around you to the required competence level? You are in the best position to know what is needed to do YOUR job as well as you do it. That means you will be best placed to develop others – subordinates, colleagues etc to do it whenever you have to go away on leave, secondment – or when you get promoted!

    ————————————————

Since starting my business, I have gone further to develop this guide into customizable templates that can be modified – on request – for use by trainees/new recruits or re-deployed/promoted employees in any organization.

    You Can Do It Yourself

It is important to note here that you can even use resource persons within your organisation(or yourself!) , to study what I have said here about the SMDG document and produce a tool that will deliver similar results for your business.

Alternatively you can contact me for details about how a Templated Custom Self-Managed Development Guide(SMDG) can be developed for your company.

Why Any Good Manager Will Find A Tool Like The SMDG Useful

I believe an important measure of performance for managers and executives should be “People Development“. Some managers have subordinates reporting to them for years who NEVER improve or become better on their jobs.

Other managers would handle that same group of reports for one year, and have them displaying dramatic improvements in their abilities – even delivering superlative workplace performances perpetually!

More often than not, the reason for this kind of transformation is traceable to the willingness of the manager to coach and develop his/her subordinates. Confirmation of this is usually readily obtained from the subordinates themselves, who will naturally hold the latter type of manager in high esteem.

Think about what I’ve said above with an open mind, and you’ll find that it’s true. Become a coach and people developer. It’s a sure way of achieving sustainable success.

One relatively easy and painless way you can effectively coach and develop people who report to you (or that you are responsible for) is by developing a customised SMDG for them – and getting them to use it, under your close supervision.

Judging by the results I achieved(see my story in the box above) by doing something similar in my workplace, you can – apart from improving their competencies – expect to enjoy the respect and admiration of those you manage.

In addition, you can look forward to earning recognition for your ability to develop employee potentials to the benefit of the company. Lastly, it would only be a matter of time before such recognition translates to career advancement for you.

If the above enumerated benefits appeal to you, then I suggest you seriously consider using the SMDG tool routinely in your coaching and developing efforts from today.

You can email a one page Frequently Asked Questions Acrobat PDF e-flyer on preparation of a Self-Managed Development Guide(SMDG) to yourself, using the File Mailer web form on the Free Resouces page on my website.
